Reasons Why 2000 Ravens Defense Tops Seahawks

The argument over the best defense of all-time has begun again. Check the stats.



The Seattle Seahawks put on a defensive performance to remember last night in Super Bowl XLVIII, holding the record-setting Denver Broncos offense to just one touchdown and eight points.

Thus, the conversation of the greatest defense of all-time has begun once again.

The 1985 Chicago Bears, the 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers and 2000 Ravens are the three most often in the conversation.

The Ravens have gone head-to-head with each historic defense in past debates countless times, so we won’t get back into that.

Now there’s a new contender.

Are the Ravens better than this year’s Seahawks?

Here are five reasons to argue in favor of Baltimore:

1) Fewer points per game

It all comes down to points. The Ravens allowed just 10.3 points per game over the 2000 season. The Seahawks surrendered 14.4 points per game. That’s more than a field goal difference.

2) Fewer yards per game

Baltimore’s 2000 defense surrendered 247.9 yard per game. The Seahawks led the league, but gave up 273.6 yards per contest. That’s more than 25 yards per game, or over 10 percent more.

3) More turnovers

The Seahawks got four turnovers out of the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. They led the league with 39 takeaways during the regular season. But the 2000 Ravens defense was even more ball hungry. That unit had 49 turnovers on the season. The Ravens forced 26 fumbles and had 26 recoveries. There were 14 different players with at least one fumble recovery and eight with at least one interception.

4) Fewer points allowed in Super Bowl

The 2000 Ravens are still the only team not to allow an offensive touchdown in the Super Bowl. The New York Giants only scored on a 97-yard kickoff return by Ron Dixon in the third quarter. The Broncos also could have scored more points with field goals had they not been in such a big hole. The Ravens defense didn’t have a huge lead for much of the game.

5) Fewer yards allowed in Super Bowl

Despite their low point total, the Broncos moved the ball on the Seahawks at times. They put up 306 total offensive yards. Peyton Manning set the Super Bowl record for completions (34). The Giants hardly moved the ball against the 2000 Ravens. They had 152 yards of offense and punted 11 times. The Broncos were a better offense than the 2000 Giants, but New York was not a bad offense. They scored 41 points in the NFC championship.

　国内女子ツアー「大王製紙エリエールレディスオープン」が、愛媛県松山市にあるエリエールゴルフクラブ松山で19日(金)から3日間の日程で開催される。今季の国内女子ツアーも残り2試合、賞金ランキングではアン・ソンジュ(韓国)が2位の横峯さくらに約3,400万円差をつけ独走中。アンの成績しだいでは、最終戦の「LPGAツアーチャンピオンシップリコーカップ」を待たずに賞金女王が決まってしまう。2008年に今大会を制している横峯にとってはまさに正念場。2年ぶりの優勝を決めて、賞金女王の行方を何とか最終戦まで持ち込みたいところだ。

　プロアマが行われたこの日、横峯もしっかりと最終調整を行った。「調子は悪くないですが、けっこう風が吹くので状況判断をしっかりしなくはいけませんね」とコースを警戒。2年前に勝ってるとはいえ「悪いイメージはないですが難しいですね」と一筋縄では攻略できないことを口にした。

　横峯は報道陣から「勝つしかないという気持ちで今大会を臨む？」と質問されると「勝ちたいと思っても勝てるもでもないし、しっかり自分のプレーをして結果がついてくれれば嬉しいです」 とコメント。アンを逆転するには2戦全勝が絶対条件だけにプレッシャーにならないはずはない。だが「宮崎(最終戦)までという思いはあります」と簡単に賞金女王を譲らない覚悟だ。「明日から良いスタートが切れるように頑張ります」と熱い意気込みを見せる横峯。初日はディフェンディングチャンピオンの有村智恵、先週優勝の佐伯三貴とともに9時39分にスタートする。

＜東建ホームメイトカップ　2日目＞◇13日◇東建多度カントリークラブ・名古屋(7,081ヤード・パー71)

　三重県にある東建多度カントリークラブ・名古屋にて開催中の国内男子ツアー開幕戦「東建ホームメイトカップ」2日目。初日、2アンダー16位タイとまずまずのスタートを切った石川遼。この日の前半は出入りの激しいゴルフとなった。

　石川は出だしの10番でボギーを叩いてしまうと、12番パー5ではティショットがOBとなり痛恨のダブルボギー。その後、17番パー5でこの日初のバーディを奪うと、18番でもセカンドを1メートルにつけ連続バーディを奪取。トータル1アンダーとスコアを1つ落とし後半のプレーに入った。石川は現在39位タイとなっている。

　三重県にある東建多度カントリークラブ・名古屋にて開催中の国内男子ツアー開幕戦「東建ホームメイトカップ」2日目。初日に単独首位に立った額賀辰徳がこの日も2つスコアを伸ばしトータル9アンダーで首位を堅守した。2打差の2位タイには上田諭尉、冨山聡、リチャード・リー(ニュージーランド)ら3選手がつけている。

　石川遼は6バーディ・2ボギー・1ダブルボギーと出入りの激しいゴルフでスコアを2つ伸ばし、初日と変わらず16位タイに入った。

　三重県にある東建多度カントリークラブ・名古屋で開催されている、国内男子ツアー「東建ホームメイトカップ」の2日目。7アンダー単独首位でスタートした額賀辰徳が、トータル9アンダーまでスコアを伸ばし首位をキープした。

　昨日に続き、この日も難しい風が舞うコンディションとなった。額賀は前半の11番でボギーを先行すると、16番パー3では3パットのボギーと苦しいラウンドが続いた。だが、17番パー5で2オンに成功して最初のバーディを奪うと、後半の2番でもバーディ。4番パー5では2オンに成功してイーグルを奪った額賀はこの日、1イーグル・3バーディ・3ボギーの“69”をマーク。スコアを2つ伸ばして2日目を終えた。

　「昨日とは調子も含めて違う点が多かった」とホールアウト後にコメントした額賀。初日は気温の暖かい午後からのスタートとだったが、この日は肌寒い7時40分のスタート。「体の切れも違った」とショットではタテの距離感に微妙なズレを感じた。それでも「前半は我慢のゴルフとなったが、上がってみればナイスプレー」と納得の様子。「決勝ラウンド？ まったくノープランです。まさかこの位置で3日目を迎える予定ではなかったので」と冗談交じりに話したが、心の中では静かに闘志を燃やしている。

＜東建ホームメイトカップ　2日目＞◇13日◇東建多度カントリークラブ・名古屋(7,081ヤード・パー71)

　三重県にある東建多度カントリークラブ・名古屋で開催されている、国内男子ツアー「東建ホームメイトカップ」の2日目。16位タイスタートの石川遼は、序盤からつまづく苦しいラウンドとなったが、我慢を続け6バーディ・2ボギー・1ダブルボギーとスコアを2つ伸ばしてホールアウト。首位とは5打差のトータル4アンダーで決勝ラウンドに進む。

　INスタートの石川は、出だしの10番をボギーとすると、12番パー5ではティショットが右のカート道に当たりOB。ダブルボギーを叩いて後退し、嫌な空気が流れてしまう。だが「あのOBがOBじゃなかったら、こういう気持ちになれなかった」我慢をするということを自分に言い聞かせ、13番では嫌な距離のパーパットを沈め流れを呼び込む。その流れは17番から後半の1番までの3連続バーディにつながり、3番パー3ではあわやホールインワンかというスーパーショットを披露。「(ティグランドからは)ピンに当たったのは見えなかったが完璧だった」と海外ツアー参戦から学んだ、ピンポイントに狙っていく攻め方ができたことを喜んだ。

　その後4番パー5では、ティショットがバンカーへ。目玉となりボギーを叩いてしまうが、終盤で2つのバーディを奪い返した石川。「つらかったが我慢できた。上手くいってくれればいいと自分に言い聞かせ、気持ちを切り替えることができた」とこの日のラウンドを振り返った。

　「トップとの差は離れているが、(難しいコンディションの中)2日間のプレーは良かった」と話した石川。「決勝ラウンドは上だけを見てスコアを伸ばしたい。いいプレーをしても悪いプレーをしても基本は我慢。明日も落ち着いてプレーします」とムービングデーの活躍を誓った。

Bulls set no limits on Rose's playing time

When the NBA regular season starts next week, Derrick Rosewill be full-go.

Chicago Bulls vice president John Paxson said Thursday on The Waddle & Silvy Show on ESPN Chicago 1000 that the team plans no restrictions on minutes or games played for the guard in his return from knee surgery.

"Look, Derrick wants to play. He's been out for an entire year," Paxson said. "He's showing no signs that would make us think along those lines. ... We're all confident that we're beyond that. He's got to push himself. Let's face it, he spent a lot of time and effort into rehabbing this knee. ... He's not coming to us to put any limitations on him.

"As an organization we don't want him playing 48 minutes a night -- that's not going to happen, of course -- but in that 35- to 38-minute range, that's what he was going to do anyway, and I don't see that changing."

Rose, who missed the entire 2012-13 season, is averaging 19.7 points during the preseason and 27.3 points in his past three games.

"We've turned the page," Paxson told the radio station. "Unless he would come up with something that would concern us, but we have no concerns right now.

"He's played six games. In reality, he is only averaging about 27 minutes a game in this preseason, and he has looked terrific. Right now, there is no reason to think that there will be any restrictions, and we're not anticipating that at all."

Rose has averaged 26.3 minutes during the preseason. The former NBA MVP played 35 minutes on Wednesday against Oklahoma City.

"He has been fearless," Paxson said. "The way he has attacked the basket, his ability preinjury to change speed in real tight spaces like he showed with some of those crossovers and sidesteps past defenders, those are things that he had prior to the injury, and he has obviously shown that and more here in the preseason. The fact that he feels the confidence in this knee that you can just see out there on the floor, that's a great sign for him."
